Endodontics or Root Canal Therapy

Our primary goal is to save your natural teeth whenever possible. Our practice specializes in Endodontics, commonly referred to as root canal therapy. Endodontics is the treatment of the pulp and surrounding tissues of a tooth. When root canal therapy is performed the pulp chamber of the tooth is removed and then filled with a suitable filling material. Root canals are most often necessary when decay has reached the nerve of the tooth or the tooth has become infected. People have anywhere from 1 to 4 canals in a tooth. Extra canals may branch out and are called “accessory canals.” The number of canals and anatomy of a tooth can vary. The word “endo” comes from the Greek language and means “inside” or within. Endodontists work with the “inside” of a tooth.

Endodontic Re-treatment

Occasionally a tooth that was treated months or years ago may develop new problems. In some cases a tooth that has received endodontic treatment fails to heal or continues to have pain. You may have a another chance to save the tooth with a second endodontic procedure.

Endodontic or Apical Surgery

In some cases it may be necessary to remove the infected root tips or apex and the nearby tissue. This is known as a apical surgery or an apicoectomy. The area around the apex of the tooth that is infected is cleaned, and the tip of the root is resected and sealed. Sutures are placed and an ice pack is applied. Medication is prescribed to help alleviate any pain or discomfort and it is best to plan to rest for the remainder of the day. Most patients will have some minor swelling and occasional bruising with some numbness.

MTA

ProRoot® MTA is a revolutionary root canal repair material that is a unique improvement over other materials used for repair. Made up of fine hydrophilic particles that set in the presence of water, ProRoot® MTA seals off all pathways between the root canal system and surrounding tissues, significantly reducing bacterial migration. Its excellent biocompatibility with the dentinal wall and surrounding tissue allows for a predictable clinical healing response. Our doctors use ProRoot® MTA for:

  • repair of root perforations
  • treating internal and external root resorption
  • root-end filling
  • pulp-capping
  • apexogenesis
  • apical plus during apexification

Regeneration Procedures

Regenerative Endodontics is one of the most exciting developments in dentistry today and endodontists are at the forefront of this cutting-edge research. Regenerative endodontics uses healthy stem cells, allowing for continued development of the root and surrounding tissue. Endodontists’ knowledge in the fields of pulp biology, dental trauma and tissue engineering can be applied to deliver biologically based regenerative endodontic treatment of necrotic immature permanent teeth resulting in continued root development, increased thickness in the dentinal walls and apical closure. These developments in regeneration of a functional pulp-dentin complex have a promising impact on efforts to retain the natural dentition, the ultimate goal of endodontic treatment.

Internal Bleaching

Internal Bleaching procedures are performed on devitalized teeth that have undergone endodontic treatment (a.k.a. “Root Canal”) but are discolored due to internal staining of the tooth structure by blood and other fluids that leaked in.  Unlike external bleaching, which brightens teeth from the outside in, internal bleaching brightens teeth from the inside out.

Treatment of Traumatic Injuries

Traumatic dental injuries often occur in accidents or sports-related injuries. Chipped teeth account for the majority of all dental injuries. Dislodged or knocked- out teeth are examples of less frequent, but more severe injuries. Treatment depends on the type, location and severity of each injury. Any dental injury, even if apparently mild, requires examination by a dentist or an endodontist immediately. Sometimes, neighboring teeth suffer an additional, unnoticed injury that will only be detected by a thorough dental exam. Endodontists are dentists who specialize in treating traumatic dental injuries. With their advanced skills, techniques and technologies they can often save injured teeth. If you have a cracked or injured tooth, find an endodontist near you right away!
